TANZANIA

With no less than eight international borders, Tanzania is exciting and varied, less developed than Kenya and has some amazing national parks and reserves. The Serengeti and Ngorogoro Crater are the best known of these, with spectacular wildlife. Walking in the Serengeti with a top guide full of knowledge is one of the best experiences to combine with focusing on seeing and photographing wildlife from a vehicle. Huge landscapes and vast open plains fill your soul with peace and exhilaration at the same time. The south of Tanzania’s Selous Reserve and Ruaha National Parks are wild and alluring. Walking safaris, small camps and lodges and fewer visitors than the northern parks make these areas very special and unique.

It is very easy to fly to Zanzibar, and Pemba and Mafia Islands from the bush with excellent scheduled flights. Mafia Island is wild and unspoilt with some of the best snorkelling and diving you will find anywhere. You can even swim with whale sharks at certain times of the year, sleeping in tree-houses far from the world of modern resorts. Pemba Island has amazing diving and a variety of luxury boutique lodges and eco guest houses. You can learn to dive in these places at world class dive centres.

Zanzibar is exotic and alluring. Steeped in history, thousands of years as a trading centre linking Africa with Arabia, Chinese and Portugese traders, walking the streets of the ancient Stone Town is an assault on the senses. Stunning carved wooden doors, small winding streets filled with markets and old buildings, it is a hectic place with some amazing local eateries and restaurants, and atmosphere of hustle and bustle. Strongly Islamic, like Lamu town, you should dress appropriately here and respect local traditions. Ladies should wear long skirts or loose trousers, and cover their shoulders. Men should wear shirts with short or long sleeves, and enjoy feeling part of an ancient and traditional working town rather than a modern resort. Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia Islands can be combined with a safari in Tanzania or Kenya. If you are keen on diving or would like to learn, these islands have excellent diving in the coral reefs, and there are several dive schools here.
